If I've posted a photo of yours that you would like removed, just ask and I will remove the post. Assuming you are indeed the photographer, you do not need to state a reason, just your preference that the photo be taken off of plumpr. If given, however, thoughtful reasons are useful, as I'd prefer not to piss people off and knowing why you'd like it removed is helpful in that regard.

On February 20, I received word that somebody wanted their photo removed. I did so but left a link to the photo as the post had comments that I wanted to keep (basically showing that I am willing to remove posts upon request). I sent the photographer a message stating such (and apologizing twice) and she replied that she'd like the link removed as well. Disappointing, but understandable.

When I went to delete the post, I saw that a friend of hers (who was depicted in the photo in question) had posted a comment also asking that the link be deleted:

As the other woman in the photo and the best friend of the owner, I think I can safely speak for the both of us when I say I'd like the link deleted as well.

You might want to check any flickr photos you've uploaded. If they say "All Rights Reserved" and are not under a Creative Commons (neither of us adopted a CC policy), you should check with the owner of the photographs before reposting; especially considering the nature of this blog.

I found this comment to be both condescending and inaccurate. Unfortunately, I allowed the friend's attitude to influence my decision to respect the photog's wishes and remove the link (though it is gone now):

You seriously misunderstand the internet if you think any sort of license is required to link to content on the web. Therefore, the link stays on principle, for now at least.

To which she responded:

I never said anything about the legality of links. You asked if she'd like it removed, I responded for the both of us that yes, she would. The legality is in the breach of copyright when you upload images that do not belong to you. If you want to be an asshole about it, I'm more than happy to take it up with Blogger and my attorney on behalf of myself and any other copyrighted material you might have on here.

I feel I am required to respond to this. (She also posted some nasty stuff on her blog which will remain unaddressed.)

First off, I haven't stolen or uploaded anybody's photos. They are all linked to both the photo's flickr page and to the photographer's page. This usage is "accepted (and even encouraged!)" by the flickr Terms of Service that everyone agrees to when they sign up. They even provide an internal Blog This feature to facilitate it, as well as an API for external applications.

I have always respected the "Blog This" setting of a picture I'm considering linking here. If you have it disabled, you will not find you picture here. Occasionally, I will post links to photos that have Blog This disabled, but those are links not photos. Links make the web go 'round.

Second, there is Fair Use concept built into U.S. copyright law. I do not claim to understand the intricacies of this concept enough to say definitively that posting flickr images on a non-commercial blog falls under Fair Use (it would likely take a court ruling to say for sure), but I believe it probably does, especially given flickr's policies stated above. But again, no lawyers are necessary. Just ask and your photo is removed. "Creative Commons" is pretty much irrelevant to this discussion.

Third, and most importantly, when you upload a photo to flickr it will be available to literally hundreds to applications, everything from search engines to feed readers to desktop widgets. Welcome to the internet. This is especially true if you tag your photos. If your tags include 'tits', 'boobies' or 'cleavage', then people looking for titties will see them. That's pretty much the whole point.

What plumpr does is not really different than what Google or Bloglines does. Gathering content that meets a certain criteria and providing a service to people who are looking for that content. Now, I understand that the "big, beautiful" focus of plumpr may make some people uncomfortable and I am sincerely sorry to anyone I have offended, but if you put your picture on the web some people are going to have "bad" thoughts about it, whether or not your picture is posted here.

There are no ads on plumpr, no affiliate links to porn sites. There are just pictures of women that I find attractive. The photos I choose are, for the most part, tasteful and those that aren't are at least interesting. I feel there is more than just prurience here, that there is true appreciation of beauty. I post a lot of photos here and, no, I don't usually ask for permission. I do it because flickr makes it easy, because a few dozen readers enjoy it, and because most flickrites recognize the value of the extra page views. If I had to go through the step of asking permission for every post, well plumpr simply wouldn't happen. I'm too lazy.

If you've got something to say about this, good or bad, please feel free.

Update: the hiatus may well be permanent.
